The West Wind Kindergarten and Nursery School is a co-operative, non-profit institution that accommodates 70 odd students who range in age from three to five. The school is located at Oomer Park, just off Breach Candy, in Mumbai, India. In 1947, five women who believed that their children deserved individual attention and had the right to learn in a pleasant environment came together and formed the school later to be known as West Wind. The school has stayed true to this noble founding vision, and the unusual curriculum encompasses not just formal academic training but also a wide variety of activities such as music, exercise, art and craft, yoga and dance. Such an innovative and unique environment can only be fostered in the presence of great teachers. Led by Ms. Roshan Curmally, the current principal and a teacher who has been with the school for over 50 of its 55 years, West Wind's dedicated and enthusiastic faculty maintain the school's high educational standards. Mothers play a large role in the functioning of West Wind, and are additonally responsible for the general administration of the school. An Executive Committee, comprising mothers elected from the general body, governs the affairs of the school. West Wind takes pride in being able to instil confidence and a feeling of self worth in its children. To this end, outings to places of interest or extra-curricular presentations are regularly organised. The children also get the chance to perform on stage at the West Wind Fun Fair cum Fete Bazaar, perhaps the most anticipated event in the school year. Students and mothers create a number of artistic items for sale and parents organize a variety of games and food stalls. All proceeds go to charities dedicated to improving preschool education for underprivileged children including the Stree Baal Sanjivani Trust, Baal Asha and Concern India.
